BRIGHTON 2-1 MAN UTD: Danny Welbeck’s 100th club career goal and a late strike from Joao Pedro secured a memorable and deserved victory for the Seagulls against Erik ten Hag’s side

Manchester United were hit with a late Brighton sucker punch as the Seagulls secured a dramatic, stoppage time victory.

Joao Pedro was the hero for the South Coast club as he nodded home late on to continue the hosts’ perfect start to the campaign. Ex-Red Devil Danny Welbeck had opened the scoring from close range midway through the first half of Saturday’s clash. The Seagulls continued to threaten through the striker, while veteran midfielder James Milner also had a number of chances.

Despite that, Erik ten Hag’s men found themselves level on the hour mark through Amad’s deflected effort. Alejandro Garnacho then netted but saw his strike ruled out by VAR.

Ten Hag sticks by Zirkzee theory

It was certainly a surprise to see summer signing Joshua Zirkzee benched on the South coast. After all, the former Bologna man had secured the Red Devils three points against Fulham with a memorable debut goal.

But supporters should not be surprised. Following the Dutchman’s arrival, Erik ten Hag suggested that he would need to time to adapt to the demands of Premier League football. And his place on the bench against Brighton appears to be part of that process.

It did not take long for Ten Hag to turn to Zirkzee as he replaced Mason Mount at half-time. He worked hard but was ultimately the villain for the Red Devils but more about that later on…

Welbeck celebrates 100

From a current Red Devils striker to a former one, Danny Welbeck was left toasting his 100th career goal against his former side. Some horrendous defending saw two crosses failed to be cut out before reaching Kaoru Mitoma.

The Japanese international picked out Welbeck, who slid in to poke home. And despite his strike coming against his former side, the former Red Devils academy graduate allowed himself a celebration considering his milestone.

It’s also now two goals in as many games for the forward at the start of the campaign – form he will be very keen to continue throughout the remainder of the season. It’s also the sixth time he has found the net against Man United.

Brighton threaten more

Even after Welbeck’s opener, Brighton had a number of opportunities to add to their lead. An excellent team move saw the Seagulls tear through their visitors, with ex-Liverpool star Milner given the simple opportunity to roll home.

But he did not get enough purchase on his effort and Diogo Dalot got back just in time to clear the ball off of the line. Milner also fired a presentable effort from range over.

Welbeck might have doubled his afternoon’s work after another brilliant Brighton move but nodded right into the arms of Onana, while he then rattled the bar with another effort.

Red Devils finally hit back

Brighton’s missed chances eventually came back to bite them as the Red Devils found an equaliser through Amad. The Ivorian winger raced down the right flank, cut inside Jack Hinselwood and let fly with a powerful effort.

Both Lewis Dunk and Jan Paul van Hecke slid in to try and clear but the latter only served the thunder the ball into his own net. It was just the tonic the Red Devils needed as they threatened to lose control of the game.

Offside controversy denies Red Devils

Man United thought they had claimed the lead after polishing off a stunning move. Amad released Bruno Fernandes down the right, who crossed towards substitute Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentinian forward tapped home and wheeled off in celebration. Unfortunately, a stray knee from Zirkzee saw the goal chalked off.

The ball had hit the Dutchman – who was offside and practically on the goalline. The officials did not see the touch initially but VAR intervened and correctly ruled the strike out to the frustration of Garnacho, Zirkzee and more.
