Having won the Carabao Cup four years in a row, Manchester City have now not been past the quarter-finals of the competition in the last three seasons.

Nathan Jones’ Southampton ended Pep Guardiola’s bid for all four trophies last season, although City fans won’t have minded given what happened in Istanbul a few months later.

Newcastle will provided for a City side that hosted eight changes from Saturday’s match with Nottingham Forest, with Erling Haaland staying on the bench. Rodri served the first of his three-game ban for his red card at the weekend.

Alexander Isak’s goal eight minutes after half-time proved to be the difference despite City dominating the majority of the play in both halves.

The result denotes City’s earliest exit in the Carabao Cup since 2012. It’s also the first time Pep Guardiola has lost a third round domestic cup game since taking over.

Look back on how the night unfolded below.

Guardiola explains why Haaland didn’t come on

Pep Guardiola said he never intended to play Erling Haaland against Newcastle, despite Manchester City falling to a 1-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup.

Haaland was rested at St James’ Park, along with captains Kyle Walker and Ruben Dias, and remained on the bench despite Newcastle’s lead from the 51st minute.

Explaining the decision to rest Haaland, Guardiola said: “I thought Kyle was a lot of minutes, Erling a lot of minutes We have a lot of games ahead of us. Maybe the last 10-15 minutes [to bring him on] but I decided not to do it.”

Howe outwits Guardiola to end Man City quadruple hopes

Manchester City won’t add a quadruple to their treble.

Pep Guardiola got a booking for arguing with Eddie Howe at St James’ Park, and it was the Newcastle boss who saw his in-game changes come off rather than the City manager.

Howe revitalised his side at half-time and their strong start to the second half was enough to beat a much-changed City side.

Man City player ratings vs Newcastle

Stefan Ortega

Manchester City’s cup goalkeeper stood firm when needed, saving from Jacob Murphy in the first half. Helpless for Newcastle’s goal. 6

Rico Lewis

Lewis has struggled for minutes thanks to Kyle Walker’s good form, but sent a reminder of his quality at Newcastle. He was inverting inside and supporting Kalvin Phillips, also popping up in attack, but left Isak unmarked to score. 6

Nathan Ake

Captain for the night, Ake was playing at left-back, defensive midfield, left wing and attacking midfield all in one. With the five captains all out of the XI, it’s a sign of Ake’s status in the squad that he led the team out – and his all-action performance was a fitting return. 7

FT – NEW 1-0 MNCKEY EVENT

Full-time

City are out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle courtesy of Isak’s second-half goal for Newcastle.

It’s their earliest exit for 11 years.

90+4’ – NEW 1-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Foden appeals

Ball over the defence is chased by Foden who feels Targett clashed with him illegally.

Referee says no much to the anger of Foden, probably appealing more hopefully than expectantly.

Joelinton hit one into Ortega just moments before

Six minutes added time

Five of those remain

Lewis just wide!

Lewis pulls the ball just wide from Pope’s right post from the edge of the ball.

Newcastle fans held their breath for a second there, as probably did City fans.

Time running out

Phillips loses the ball to Gordon who runs into the box and pokes it into Oretga’s grateful grasp.

A reminder that an equaliser sends it to penalties with no extra time – but City need to find the net first. The regulation 90 are almost up.

Doku among the action

And just like that, Doku outdoes Livramento and almost threads one through to Grealish but Pope collects.

A few phases later, Doku gives a free-kick away after losing the ball. Been a challenging second-half for the sub.

85’ – NEW 1-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Free-kick cleared

Set-piece comes to nothing with Livramento mopping up. He’s been good for Newcastle tonight.

83’ – NEW 1-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Nunes half-opening

A ball over the top almost is brought under control by Nunes but Livramento comes in to rescue the hosts.

Foden wins a free kick as City look for an equaliser.

Guardiola booked

An argument between Pep Guardiola and Jason Tindall sees the City boss booked.

He was in fact trying to stop one of his coaches saying one word too many to the Newcastle bench after the hosts played on when Sergio Gomez was down. The manager took one for the team there.

78’ – NEW 1-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Foden important

Foden has explained how he wants to show he can become one of City’s main stalwarts this season.

This substitute appearance in harsh conditions is a chance for him to show he can be just that. A hard task, though.

76’ – NEW 1-0 MNCJOE BRAY

Crunch time for Guardiola

City are strikerless now without Alvarez, but he’s been anonymous this season half.

Bobb is playing the false nine, with Foden in support. That’s three City subs, but Guardiola can still make two more as this is the Carabao Cup, but only with one more stoppage

Meanwhile, Grealish strikes one into Pope’s arms

73’ – NEW 1-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Foden on

Phil Foden is being brought on for Julian Alvarez. Looks like Bobb is going central in the attack

Guardiola is out of his seat shouting instructions

71’ – NEW 1-0 MNCJOE BRAY

Inexperience rife

Guardiola is moving Sergio Gomez to left-back and putting Doku on the wing. Nunes replaces Kovacic which feels pre-planned.

Manu Akanji takes the armband after Ake goes off – so he is presumably the seventh captain.

This inexperienced side just got moreso. Akanji is the most senior player and he only arrived last summer. Jack Grealish is the longest serving on the pitch and is in his third season.

Akanji and Phillips booked

Very uncharacteristically, Akanji outpours his frustration after giving away a foul on the halfway line.

Phillips then catches Murphy with a challenge and also goes into the book.

City need a calm head – Tonali has just won a corner for the hosts.

Onus on City

They haven’t been doing so just yet but Newcastle have the option of sitting back if they need to now they’ve got a 1-0 lead on home soil.

City have a youthful and rotated side out there and so may need to call on the seniors to change the tide.

Isak was down with what looks like a muscular injury. St James’ Park quieter as Almiron comes on for the goal scorer

Isak is really into it.

After putting in a tackle he jees up the crowd before going on another attack.

Haaland has been sent out to warm up.

55’ – NEW 1-0 MNCJOE BRAY

Guardiola beckons Grealish

Pep Guardiola beckoned over Jack Grealish immediately after the goal for some instructions.

City need him to step up now they’re behind. Tino Livramento then floors Grealish, and the winger makes an impassioned plea to the fourth official.

Newcastle and their fans are celebrating every challenge and throw-in now. City are in a game and no mistake.

54’ – NEW 1-0 MNCKEY EVENT

GOAL Newcastle

Eddie Howe must have given some team talk.

A number of unbroken passes ends with Joelinton driving into the box crossing across the face of goal.

Lewis lets the ball run only for Isak to come in at the back post and find the net.

51’ – NEW 0-0 MNCJOE BRAY

St James’ Park louder now

It’s a lot noisier now as Newcastle have come out on the attack. They’re also being a lot more physical and not letting City dictate the ball.

For home fans, it’s exactly what they will have been asking for at the break. Pep Guardiola had no problems with that Gordon sliding tackle on Kovacic, in fact he seemed to applaud it. Dias, Doku and Nunes are warming up for City.

Newcastle start well

On several occasions within seconds, City players get legally shoved off the ball with Newcastle penning City in.

A cross comes to nothing but the home fans are up, Gordon putting in a crunching tackle on Kovacic to send the volume up a further notch.

48’ – NEW 0-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Phillips fires over

After a brief attack from Newcastle, Kovacic leads the break.

It eventually comes to Grealish who slows the play and finds Phillips who hammers a shot over the bar. That’s now three shots for the midfielder this game.

46 – NEW 0-0 MNCJOE BRAY

Two changes for Newcastle

Two attacking changes coming for Newcastle – Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon.

City overloaded the midfield before the break and Newcastle had no outlet. This looks to be addressing both issues for the hosts. Young duo Lewis Miley and Lewis Hall are replaced.

City on top with Newcastle dart-like on the break. Clear chances for both sides few and far between but Guardiola will definitely be the happier manager.

Newcastle growing

… but at the wrong time, for them.

Livramento flashes a cross through the box with no-one on the end. Hlaf-time looming with one added minute of stoppages.

44’ – NEW 0-0 MNCJOE BRAY

Bobb doing well

Pep looks away ruefully as Bobb’s cutback is cut out. I’d imagine his half time message to the youngster will be to trust himself more. He’s getting in good positions.

42’ – NEW 0-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Ortega called into action

Make that two touches!

Newcastle break through Isak who feeds Murphy who sees his shot blocked behind by Ortega. Big chance for Magpies there.

City’s half summed up

City win two succesive corners with Newcastle under pressure to clear – but do so without much trouble.

Stefan Ortega has just had what must be his first touch of the ball after Pope tries route one.

38’ – NEW 0-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Visitors need to do more with dominance

Newcastle have had just one touch in City’s final third all game as has been the visitors’ dominance.

The Blues have not been able to work many clear cut chances and Alvarez will be annoyed he hasn’t scored either of his opportunities.

City ticking

Wild back-pass from Lewis Hall means the ball evades Pope’s control is out for a corner.

Newcastle looking sloppy

As well as not being able to work an attack, Newcastle look vulnerable at the back.

Lewis capitalises on a Targett mistake and crosses from the byline to no avail.

Hosts very much looking like a side that has made 10 changes.

Grealish looked to have broken the defence but Dummett tracks back to produce a well-timed challenge.

It’s not the first time City have almost gone clean through.

21’ – NEW 0-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

Guardiola rues missed chance

Pep couldn’t believe that Oscar Bobb didn’t shoot there. He had his arms up in disbelief when the youngster played in Alvarez and was still making the point to his coaches when play was restarting.

Bobb was doing what he thought was the right thing there, of course, but sometimes it’s worth just having a shot. Sergio Gomez gets a clap from the boss after a run forward.

Alvarez forces save

Bobb finds space and drives at the Newcastle defence. He unselfishly lays it off to Alvarez who forces a save from the feet of goalkeeper Pope.

Bobb may have had a crack himself there but for his youthful will to not mess up.

16’ – NEW 0-0 MNCISAAC JOHNSON

City gain control

The game has now ebbed into the kind of flow expected when City play – the Blues camping in the opposition half.

That said, no clear cut chance has been created.

13’ – NEW 0-0 MNCJOE BRAY

Newcastle targeting right side

Newcastle seem keen to attack City’s right, which is very inexperienced.

Rico Lewis is floating around, Manu Akanji is covering, Sergio Gomez hasn’t played right wing for City before, and Oscar Bobb is making his full debut.

In support, Kalvin Phillips is looking a little nervous at times. There’s mistakes to be made on that side – and Newcastle are trying to force them. The opposite side – with Ake, Grealish and Kovacic – is far more stable

No fooling the Croat there.

Lewis closes down Targett

Lewis is already getting forward and coming inside whenever he can.

It will be interesting to see how City cope without the brilliant Kyle Walker tonight, arguably City’s most consistent defender this season.
