Tottenham have key steps in place to ensure that Son Heung-Min does not follow in the footsteps of Harry Kane in leaving the club with his contract expiring. The 30-year-old was sold this summer with Daniel Levy somewhat backed into a corner with just 12 months left on his deal.

Spurs had made attempts to renew Kane’s contract to stop themselves from getting into such a tangle but were unable to come to an agreement and eventually sold their all-time top scorer to Bayern Munich earlier this year. With Son, the club are determined not to allow the process to be repeated.

Son now has just under two years remaining on his deal, one last extended in 2021, but The Telegraph reports that there is an option to trigger a further year. The 31-year-old had been linked with a move away from north London after speculation over an offer from Saudi Arabia but is now leading the line for Ange Postecoglou.

“I have many things to do in the Premier League. Money doesn’t matter to me now, and the pride of playing football, to play in my favourite league is important,” he said during pre-season, putting any doubts over an exit to bed. “I want to play more for Tottenham in the Premier League. I’ll prepare well when I’m back to Spurs.”

Son is now captaining the side and has taken on an even more important role from the one held in recent seasons. Having also started the season in fine form it is said the club will take up the option to extend his deal to 2026, tying him down for the long haul.

However, it is also said that the extension hasn’t been triggered yet and isn’t expected to be too soon but the expectation is that it will happen, even if it goes beyond the end of this campaign. Son has scored three times under Postecoglou, who rewarded him for his position within the club with the honour of replacing long-standing leader Hugo Lloris as captain, and has opened up the feeling of being told the news.
