REVEALED: How Xabi Alonso  lost the Race of becoming Liverpool manager.

Xabi Alonso has opened up about his decision to not take over as Liverpool manager after Jurgen Klopp’s departure. Alonso, an integral part of Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League-winning team and current Bayer Leverkusen manager, had been strongly linked with the position. Despite this, he chose to stay with Leverkusen, confirming his decision at a recent press conference.

Alonso mentioned multiple reasons for his decision to remain at Leverkusen. Under his leadership of 18 months, the club is on the cusp of winning their first-ever Bundesliga title and is in contention for the German Cup and Europa League, boasting an unbeaten streak across competitions.

When asked why he rejected the opportunity at Liverpool, Alonso said to TNT Sports, “There were many reasons for deciding to stay at the club. After one year, we’re building a team, we’re building a great spirit here.

The season has been great so far, and for sure we want to keep having this thing together. I felt part of it.”

He further explained that the timing didn’t feel right and as such, he is fully committed to his role at Leverkusen.

With his side’s unbeaten run on the line, they prepare to face West Ham in the Europa League quarter-final first leg, hoping to secure a lead for the return leg in London.

Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim has emerged as the new favorite to become the next Liverpool manager
