Aston Villa face Liverpool on Monday night knowing that victory will ensure a top four finish and a place in next season’s Champions League, with skipper John McGinn calling on his team-mates to get the job done

John McGinn has told Aston Villa’s squad: “We owe it to ourselves to reach the Champions League.”

 

Villa’s skipper admits that finding the three points necessary to cement a top-four berth is a tall order with Liverpool and in-form Crystal Palace rounding off a hard campaign.

 

The club crashed out of the Europa Conference League as their injury-hit squad failed to overcome the hurdle of Olympiakos in the semi-finals. Hopes had been high that Villa – favourites for the competition – could end their 28-year wait for a major trophy. But now attention turns to finishing off a promising campaign in style.

 

McGinn said: “We are so close. But we just have to focus on tomorrow night. I think we owe the supporters a performance. And we owe ourselves a performance after the effort throughout the season, the graft every single day coming in.

“It has been a long hard season with many but on the road but certainly one to be proud of. But we don’t want to stop short We know what we have to do. It is in our hands.

 

“Liverpool is going to be a very, very tough game, we know that. We obviously have the crucial benefit of other results potentially going our way – but we want to get the job done ourselves and get into the top four, which would be an unbelievable achievement.”

 

The disappointment in Pireaus was almost palpable as Villa’s players trudged towards their waiting bus. Leon Bailey’s leg was heavily strapped – meaning he is an injury doubt for tonight’s game.

 

Boss Unai Emery has been conducting a weekend roll call of his injured players. There are hopes the Jamaican international will shrug off his issues. Youri Tielemans was described as ‘close’ to a return and so too left-back Alex Moreno.

McGinn added that he expects Villa Park to be in voice but says that the players in Emery’s dressing room have to find it within themselves to provide a fitting finale.

 

He added: “There has been a determination to get the done for five or six weeks – that’s the frustrating thing, we could have had it wrapped up before now.

 

“But the Premier League is extremely difficult. We have certainly had some setbacks – but this group will keep fighting. We fought on Thursday but it wasn’t enough – on another night we could have turned it around. It wasn’t to be.

 

“It’s clear the boys need a lift. However, the fans have been there the past few weeks and it is up to us to deliver now. You can wave as many scarves as you want, shout our names as loud as you want but it is up to us to find that fire and get us over the line.‌

 

“We were extremely disappointed on Thursday night. We have underachieved. We know that.
