RB Leipzig vs Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s changes had a huge impact and allowed the treble-winners to snatch victory after some wasteful finishing from their top scorer
Manchester City were in danger of heading for a third successive game without victory after a rapid counter-attack goal from Lois Openda cancelled out Phil Foden’s goal and put RB Leipzig back on level terms in Wednesday’s Champions League encounter.
But then Pep Guardiola called on his super-talented substitutes from the bench, and boy did they deliver. Julian Alvarez curled City back in front in the 85th minute with an awesome strike with almost no backlift, and then the Argentine teed up the electric Jeremy Doku, whose clinical finish clinched a 3-1 victory.
City have two wins from two in Europe and are already on track to reach the knockout stages. But they will be concerned with the form of Erling Haaland, who missed chance after chance and needed his strike partner to come off the bench and bail him out.

GOAL rates Manchester City’s players from the Red Bull Arena…
Ruben Dias Manchester City 2023-24Getty Images
Goalkeeper & Defence
Ederson (5/10):
Barely saw the ball until he had to punch away a late Werner cross. Couldn’t do much about the goal, which bounced in off the post.
Kyle Walker (5/10):
Defensively sound, didn’t get forward enough.
Ruben Dias (6/10):
Commanded the defence well for most of the game. Kept busy in the final 20 minutes.
Manuel Akanji (5/10):
Could have done more to put Openda off for the goal. Booked shortly before being taken off.
Josko Gvardiol (6/10):
Reliable on and off the ball. Didn’t do much attacking till late on.
Rico Lewis Manchester City 2023-24Getty Images
Midfield
Rico Lewis (8/10):
Very influential. Set up the goal after fine work in tandem with Bernardo. Moved the ball with purpose and hungry to win it back on the rare occasion he lost it.
Rodri (6/10):
Gave the team more balance and purpose after being suspended for the last two outings, although not at his dominant best.
Phil Foden (8/10):
City’s best player on the night. Took his goal superbly and was a menace all evening.
Jack Grealish Manchester City 2023-24Getty Images
Attack
Bernardo Silva (5/10):
Played a big role in City dominating possession. Loses a mark for missing a sitter early in the game.
Erling Haaland (4/10):
Very wasteful. Lacked sharpness in his movement and his shooting was often wayward and unconvincing.
Jack Grealish (5/10):
Couldn’t affect the game much and lacked some defensive awareness in the second half. Looked disappointed when he trudged off for Doku.

Subs & Manager
Nathan Ake (6/10):
Brought on to steady the ship and did a good job.
Jeremy Doku (8/10):
His unpredictable movement helped Alvarez score and he took his own goal superbly.
Julian Alvarez (8/10):
Won the game just a few minutes after being introduced with a sublime curling finish before making sure with a lovely pass into Doku.
Matheus Nunes (N/A):
Only came on in the 87th minute.
Pep Guardiola (8/10):
His substitutions saw City moved up a couple of notches and won the game. A fitting way to record his 103rd Champions League win, overtaking Sir Alex Ferguson’s tally. Only trails Carlo Ancelotti, who has 109.
