Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted he would one day love to go for dinner with Jurgen Klopp as he lauded the pair’s relationship ahead of facing off in the Premier League for a final time on Sunday.

 

Earlier this year, Klopp announced that he would be stepping down as Reds boss at the end of the season after nearly nine years in the role. It means Sunday’s Premier League spectacle against City is likely to be the last time both Klopp and Guardiola lock horns in English football unless City and Liverpool are drawn to face each other in the latter stages of the FA Cup,

 

The 56-year-old German has faced Guardiola 29 times during his time in charge of Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, and is the only manager to have faced the Catalan ten times or more and boast a positive record.

 

But despite going head to head with Klopp for some of the biggest honours in English and European football over the last eight years, Guardiola has said he’d love to spend some time with the Liverpool boss away from the limelight in the near future – but joked that the pair would firstly have to agree who pays for dinner.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Sunday’s game, the Manchester City manager said: “Sometimes [we speak] in the corridor before the press conference but when we were honoured to get in the [Premier League] Hall of Fame we spent time with families but in terms of lunch or dinners, it never happened.

“We have to decide who pays, that’s why we didn’t do it. I think it’s going to happen sooner or later, I would love it.”

 

Asked for his thoughts on Klopp’s decision to end his illustrious nine-year stint at Anfield at the end of the campaign, Guardiola was fully behind the German’s reasoning but admitted he couldn’t see him staying away from the game for too long and expects him in a new role “sooner or later”.

 

“I respect completely his decision,” added Guardiola. “I spoke with him and had the feeling that he will be back sooner or later,” said Guardiola.” He loves football and he explained perfectly the reason why. The Premier League is the last time but maybe we will meet in the FA Cup. We will see.”
