Pep Guardiola: I failed to get best out of kelvin Phillips

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted he has failed to get the best out of Kalvin Phillips.

The England midfielder joined City from Leeds last summer in a £45m deal but the 27-year-old has struggled for game time at the treble winners.

Phillips is set to start for only the fifth time in his City career as they face Newcastle in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports.

“Marcelo [Bielsa – ex-Leeds boss] gave Kalvin the best of Kalvin in his career,” said Guardiola.

“I’d love to have done with Kalvin what Marcelo has done to him.

“We have our own specific way to play and [he] sometimes struggles in a few things, while the previous [Leeds playing style] was perfect [for him].”

Phillips did play nearly all of the second half against Forest on Saturday following Rodri’s red card.

The Spaniard will be suspended for three matches giving Phillips the chance to prove why he turned down the opportunity to leave the club this summer.

“The club spoke with him because he did not have many minutes,” said Guardiola. “He said ‘no, I want to stay’.

“We brought Kalvin here for his quality. He is open minded, always wants to learn and wants to help. This is what we want to try to do.”

Osimhen agent threatens legal action against Napoli over TikTok video

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is reserving “the right to take legal action” against his own club after his team posted a bizarre video to TikTok seemingly mocking the player.

The odd video comes after Osimhen helped the Italian team secure a first league title, the club’s first in three decades.

Despite Osimhen singlehandedly bolstering Napoli with 31 goals across all competitions, he became the target of a strange, now-deleted video, shared to the Serie A club’s official TikTok account.

Osimhen’s agent Roberto Calenda issued a statement on Tuesday night about the incident.

He wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “What happened today on Napoli’s official profile on the TikTok platform is not acceptable. A video mocking Victor was first made public and then, but now belatedly, deleted.

“A serious fact that causes very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is suffering in the last period between media trials and fake news.”

Calenda added: “We reserve the right to take legal action and any useful initiative to protect Victor”.

The video featured a clip of the striker’s penalty miss from their match against Bologna on Sunday, with an odd, sped-up voice dubbed over the top.

The strange social media clip comes after there appeared to be tension between Osimhen and Napoli manager Rudi Garcia during the game.

The 24-year-old Nigerian striker was seen berating Garcia as he was substituted off with four minutes remaining of the goalless draw.

The bizarre social media scrap comes after Osimhen, who captured the interest of Manchester United this summer, did not sign a new contract with the Italian team.

Osimhen’s current deal runs through to the summer of 2025.

England will oppose playing Russian sides after UEFA lifts blanket ban

England will oppose playing matches against Russian football teams after UEFA lifted its blanket ban on the country taking part in its competitions to allow under-17s fixtures.

European football’s governing body took the decision at a meeting of its executive committee, 18 months after prohibiting all Russian teams from its competitions following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

UEFA said in a statement: “Children should not be punished for actions whose responsibility lies exclusively with adults, and is firmly convinced that football should never give up sending messages of peace and hope.

“It is particularly aggrieving that, due to the enduring conflict, a generation of minors is deprived of its right to compete in international football.”

Russian U17s teams will be allowed to play in Europe again but without their national flag, anthem or national kit. Games cannot be played in Russia.

But Sky News understands the Football Association (FA) does not support readmitting Russia to UEFA youth competitions, and its position remains that England teams will not play against Russia.

The ban prevented Russia playing at the Women’s European Championship in England in 2022 and from qualifying for the men’s and women’s World Cups.

UEFA insists all senior teams will remain banned at club and national team levels from its competitions.

Aleksander Ceferin, the president, said: “UEFA’s continuing suspension against Russian adult teams reflects its commitment to take a stand against violence and aggression.

“But by banning children from our competitions, we not only fail to recognise and uphold a fundamental right for their holistic development but we directly discriminate against them.

“By providing opportunities to play and compete with their peers from all over Europe, we are investing in what we hope will be a brighter and more capable future generation and a better tomorrow.”

World governing body FIFA did not reply to a request for comment.

Scunthorpe Supporters Trust calls for “re-think” after supporters banned

Scunthorpe United’s Supporters Trust has called on club owner David Hilton to “rethink” the banning of a number of supporters for “daring to air their opinions”.

Several Scunthorpe fans have claimed online that they have recently been banned from attending matches over their criticism of Hilton and his running of the club.

The Iron Trust have said on Tuesday: “Here in the United Kingdom we enjoy freedom of speech, which is everyone’s right.

“Whilst we at the Iron Trust do not condone the use of social media to attack organisations or individuals, neither can we condone the banning of supporters for daring to air their own opinions.

“Therefore, we urge the club’s owner to rethink the banning of several individuals.

“Scunthorpe United Football Club is once again in crisis, and we must all pull together for the club.

“It isn’t about any one individual, it’s about the community of Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire coming together to save their football club.

“People need to understand that, at this moment in time, for that to happen we must engage positively with the current owner, the former owner and any prospective owner that may come forward.

“Now is the time for Scunthorpe United fans everywhere to show their true iron and stand United for the future of our beloved football club.”

Sky Sports News has attempted to contact Scunthorpe United today for comment and an explanation over these banning orders, but has yet to receive an answer.

Following a second successive relegation to the Conference North, the club announced in the summer an amnesty on supporters who were banned during the course of last season, in a statement that highlighted several strong messages including “there will not be a third chance” and “zero-tolerance policy going forwards”.

One fan, David Green, has confirmed today, that his ban has been lifted following a call from Hilton in which he claims he admitted he “got it wrong”.

Green said: “Credit where credit is due – David Hilton has called me today to apologise and admitted he got it wrong regarding by banning order. It has been lifted with immediate effect.

“Regardless of what I may think of his running of the club, I respect him for doing that.”

Scunthorpe’s social media accounts also mysteriously disappeared earlier on Tuesday before reappearing again.

Owner Hilton has confirmed several days ago that the club is up for sale, while he remains in dispute with former owner Peter Swann, who still owns their Glanford Park stadium.
