Liverpool verdict: What embarrassed Michail Antonio refused to do after Liverpool beat West Ham

Liverpool match verdict as Paul Gorst reports on 3-1 win at home to West Ham United in the Premier League, here.

Klopp on Nunez

Massive steps in last few weeks. He’s a threat. He was always available for us. Takes it on his chest and we play from there. Defensive work is probably the main difference. It looks much better. Curtis and Dom help a lot.

Liverpool player ratings as Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez dominate West Ham

Liverpool player ratings from Ian Doyle are in – with some strong scores following the 3-1 win over West Ham United at Anfield.

It was level at the break, Jarrod Bowen having levelled with an excellent diving header after Mohamed Salah’s emphatic penalty gave the Reds an early lead.

There were no immediate changes from Jurgen Klopp after the first half, with big chances for Darwin Nunez and another for Bowen being squandered.

The Uruguay international made no mistake on 60 minutes, however, finishing neatly with his right after a ball over the top from Alexis Mac Allister.

Read the full ratings, here.

Diogo Jota, on as a substitute, made sure of victory late on with a neat poach via a Virgil van Dijk knockdown from Andy Robertson’s corner.

Six wins on the spin for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds who deserved their victory for an excellent second half against a good West Ham side. Up to second in the league.

Full time: Liverpool 3-1 West Ham

Full-time and Liverpool were very good in the second half with goals from the excellent Nunez and substitute Jota sealing the win. Gomez was very good

Double change for West Ham

No goal for Antonio as he comes off. Ironic cheers from the Kop as his withdrawal is read out. Kudus and Fornals come on though. Kudus scored here for Ajax last season, while Fornals always scores against Liverpool.

Nunez, Nunez, Nunez

15:36PAUL GORST

Visitors on the ropes

Liverpool are pinning West Ham back now and they can’t really get out. It seems they had a gameplan at 1-1 and can’t alter it now having gone behind. Still think a third is vital for the Reds, though

15:32PAUL GORST

One more should seal it

A third might be enough for Liverpool here for the third game in a row and they are haring after it. Salah is pulling the strings now on this right-hand side.

15:25THEO SQUIRES

Superb from Nunez!

Nunez again joins Salah as Liverpool’s joint-leading goalscorer with four goals apiece this season. Just need Diaz to get back in on the act now.

15:24KEY EVENT

Goal! Liverpool 2-1 West Ham (Nunez)

The Uruguayan times his run to perfection to volley home Mac Allister’s wonderful clipped ball. Liverpool lead!

15:23IAN DOYLE

Hammers pleased

West Ham will be very happy with how this is going. There’s an edginess to an otherwise quite quiet Anfield crowd. They look dangerous going forward and have become even more physical. Liverpool need to battle here.

15:21THEO SQUIRES

West Ham still going strong

Credit to West Ham, they have been really good at getting men behind the ball and getting two men over to stop Liverpool in their tracks and force a second phase of play. The Reds look to keep possession in such situations, which is what created that chance for Nunez, but they’ve rarely been able to test Areola.

15:19KEIFER MACDONALD

Bowen goes close

Ward-Prowse’s free-kick is headed by Bowen but it’s straight into the midriff of Alisson.

15:18THEO SQUIRES

Nunez goes close

Nunez should score. He’s unmarked on the penalty spot after Salah does brilliantly to squeeze it through to him. A great chance that he blazes wide.

15:10KEIFER MACDONALD

Back underway at Anfield

Liverpool get the second half underway

14:56IAN DOYLE

Ian Doyle’s half-time ratings

Alisson Becker 7

Superb save kept out Soucek header early on and no chance of reaching the equaliser.

Joe Gomez 7

Accepted the challenge of playing as an inverted right-back and regularly assisted the attack during busy first-half showing.

Joel Matip 7

Showed good composure at times up against the dangerous Antonio.

Virgil van Dijk 6

Solid for most of the first half but caught napping by the brave Bowen for the leveller.

Andy Robertson 7

Helped Liverpool regularly probe down the left and some solid tackles.

Alexis Mac Allister 7

Better performance first half in the number six role and shut down several West Ham attacks.

Dominik Szoboszlai 7

Looked to keep Liverpool moving before the break with some probing passing.

Curtis Jones 7

Brought energy to the engine room and the one player in a tricky opening 15 minutes to be busy for Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah 7

Always looked dangerous before break, won and converted penalty and set up chance for Nunez.

Darwin Nunez 7

Not always involved first half but a threat whenever he was, involved in winning penalty and shot saved by Areola.

Luis Diaz 7

Kept running at the West Ham defence and linked well with Robertson and Nunez in particular.

14:56KEIFER MACDONALD

Special guest at Anfield this afternoon

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner is in attendance. Will the Reds secure a win in front of the FSG chief?

14:54KEY EVENT

Half-time: Liverpool 1-1 West Ham

Kavanagh signals the end of the first half. Goals from Salah and Bowen have both sides evenly poised. Much more needed from the Reds after the break.

Added time

Four added minutes at the end of the first half.

14:51KEIFER MACDONALD

No goal!

Jones finishes off Szoboszlai’s clipped ball over the Wes Ham defence but after a lengthy VAR check the goal the referee’s decision stands and the goal is chalked off. Close.

14:48THEO SQUIRES

Sucker-punch for the Reds

Bad time for Liverpool to concede, just before half-time. They had been dealing well with West Ham’s balls into the box before the goal. A brave header from Bowen, he takes it well

14:46KEY EVENT

Goal! Liverpool 1-1 West Ham (Bowen)

West Ham are level from Jarrod Bowen’s diving header. Difficult one for Van Dijk as it was low and he went with his foot but Bowen had already committed with his head. It’s a superb flick from the winger. One each!

14:45PAUL GORST

Hammers stifled

Liverpool have dealt with West Ham’s threat from set-pieces really well so far with five minutes of normal time remaining in the first half. Matip has been excellent.

14:43THEO SQUIRES

Salah goes close

Great chance for Salah as he bends a shot narrowly wide from Diaz’s lay-off. Had more time than he thought there. In plenty of space, definitely could have taken a touch rather than rushing it first-time.

14:40KEIFER MACDONALD

Booked: Alvarez

The Hammers midfielder goes into the book for a foul on Diaz.

14:38PAUL GORST

Slick Reds moving well

Liverpool look good when they quicken the tempo. Salah has just nearly sliced one into the path of Nunez there after a Szoboszlai switch and a cushioned pass from Gomez.

14:38KEIFER MACDONALD

Nast one for Jones

Jones slammed the ground in frustration after taking a stud to the ankle. He’s been ever so bright so far, let’s hope it’s nothing serious.

14:34THEO SQUIRES

Jones impressing too

Just as Gorsty was typing that, Matip got the better of Antonio once again. He’s been the standout player for Liverpool in my book, so far, along with Curtis Jones. The midfielder’s been great leading the press to win the ball back in a slow Reds start, and looks so confident in possession. He started on the left of midfield but is now on the right after swapping with Szoboszlai.

14:32PAUL GORST

Strong start from Matip

Joel Matip has stood up well to the challenge of Antonio so far. The Hammers man has clearly tried to isolate the defender rather than taking on Van Dijk. An excellent opening half hour from Matip.

14:28PAUL GORST

Unlucky from Robertson

Unlucky from Andy Robertson who belts one first time out wide right towards Salah and Diaz in an effort to start a counter-attack. It just goes out of play before either can reach it. The Kop appreciated the effort.

14:27THEO SQUIRES

Nunez takes stick

West Ham fans with a taunt of, ‘You’re just a s**t Andy Carroll!’ in Darwin Nunez’s direction. They never learn.

14:24KEIFER MACDONALD

Reds want another spot-kick

Nunez is wrestled to the ground and immediately appeals for a penalty. VAR check says no.

14:22IAN DOYLE

Reds fortunate?

That was against the run of play. Liverpool will hope to settle because West Ham have looked sharp and dangerous going forward. There’s definitely a goal in this for the visitors.

14:22THEO SQUIRES

Salah silences doubters

Emphatic spot-kick from Salah, giving Areola no chance. Had been the smallest questioning of whether the Egyptian should stay on penalty duty for Liverpool, with his latest effort against Bournemouth saved before he scored the rebound.

No surprise with Darwin Nunez scoring midweek and Alexis Mac Allister also around, but it remains Salah’s responsibility for a reason.

14:21PAUL GORST

The Egyptian King

And there’s Mo Salah’s latest goal contribution! He makes no mistake from 12 yards to give Liverpool the lead. It was a nailed-on penalty by the way after Aguerd took down the No.11 after great work from Nunez and Diaz. Liverpool up and running with Salah’s fourth of the season. Thirteen goal contributions in as many games for him now.

14:21KEY EVENT

Goal! Liverpool 1-0 West Ham (Salah)

Salah smashes down the right. Arerola no chance.

14:20KEIFER MACDONALD

Penalty Liverpool!

Salah is floored by Aguerd after a quick break from Luis Diaz. Salah to take.

14:18PAUL GORST

Up the ante, Reds

West Ham have started really sharply here both defensively and from an attacking sense. Liverpool need to liven up a bit. It’s all a bit pedestrian so far. Salah and Nunez have barely had a kick.

14:14PAUL GORST

Nunez, Nunez, Nunez

Loud chants for Nunez after he clatters into Paqueta to disrupt an attack but the Uruguay striker was wasteful initially, playing a slack pass towards Mo Salah. It was easily cut out.

14:13IAN DOYLE

Sluggish from the Reds

Liverpool, as has often been the case this season, really struggling in the opening 10 minutes.

14:11THEO SQUIRES

Big save from Alisson

Great save from Alisson to deny Soucek though, rightly earning him a few cheers from the Kop. The Brazilian is the best goalkeeper in the world for a reason. Though, there had looked to be a foul on Szoboszlai before the West Ham cross into the box.
