Netflix Set to Release Documentary on ‘Penn State Nittany Lions’ Historic Career, Plus More Exciting Sports Content Coming Your Way

Netflix is once again expanding its growing library of sports documentaries, this time turning its lens on one of college football’s most storied programs — the Penn State Nittany Lions. The streaming giant announced that an upcoming documentary chronicling the Nittany Lions’ historic career, legendary figures, and enduring legacy will be released later this year, marking another major step in its ongoing commitment to sports storytelling.

The documentary, titled “We Are: Penn State — The Legacy of the Lions,” will explore the team’s rise from its humble beginnings to becoming one of the most successful and respected programs in NCAA history. Featuring exclusive interviews, never-before-seen footage, and emotional testimonials from past and present players, the series promises to dive deep into what makes Penn State football such a powerful institution — not just on the field, but in the hearts of its fans.

According to Netflix’s announcement, the film will highlight key eras in Penn State’s history, including the legendary coaching career of Joe Paterno, the unforgettable undefeated seasons, and the emotional rebuilding years that tested the team’s resilience and unity. It will also shine a light on the Nittany Lions’ core values of tradition, loyalty, and community — values that have defined the program for over a century.

“This is more than a story about football,” said executive producer Mark Stevenson, known for his work on Netflix’s hit sports series Quarterback and Untold. “It’s about the people, the culture, and the spirit of Penn State — a program that has shaped countless lives and inspired generations.”

Netflix has been on a roll with its sports content in recent years, producing critically acclaimed documentaries such as The Last Dance, Drive to Survive, and Full Swing. The company confirmed that this new Penn State project will be part of a broader lineup of sports releases scheduled for 2025, which includes new seasons of Formula 1: Drive to Survive, a behind-the-scenes look at the NFL Draft process, and a groundbreaking docuseries on women’s college basketball.

Penn State fans have already taken to social media to express their excitement about the announcement. Many see it as a long-overdue tribute to one of the most respected football programs in college sports. “It’s about time the world sees the true heart of Penn State,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “We are… Penn State!”

The documentary will also touch on the program’s future, spotlighting the next generation of stars who are carrying the legacy forward. Current head coach James Franklin and several standout players from recent seasons are expected to feature prominently in the series.

“We Are: Penn State — The Legacy of the Lions” is set to premiere on Netflix in early 2025, offering fans, alumni, and sports enthusiasts a powerful reminder of what makes college football — and the Nittany Lions — truly special.

With this release, Netflix continues to prove that sports storytelling can be as inspiring, dramatic, and unforgettable as the

games themselves.
