The University of Kentucky community is in mourning following the tragic death of men’s basketball player Collin Chandler, who was fatally shot in his hometown of Farmington, Utah, late Friday night. Chandler, 21, had recently completed a standout freshman season with the Wildcats, earning recognition for his athleticism and dedication both on and off the court.
Local authorities responded to reports of gunfire in a residential area of Farmington around 11 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Chandler with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and no suspects have been identified at this time.
Chandler’s journey to collegiate basketball was unique. After being named the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022, he embarked on a two-year mission trip, delaying his college career. He returned to the sport in 2024, joining the Kentucky Wildcats under head coach Mark Pope, who had previously recruited him at BYU. Chandler’s commitment to his faith and community was evident in his decision to serve abroad before pursuing his athletic ambitions.
On the court, Chandler quickly made an impact. In the annual Blue-White scrimmage, he showcased his skills by scoring 19 points and earning MVP honors, signaling a promising future ahead. His teammates and coaches lauded his work ethic, humility, and the positive energy he brought to the team.
