Mark Williams Proves His Value in First Game Back in Charlotte After Nixed Trade

Mark Williams wasted no time proving his worth to the Charlotte Hornets faithful. Just days after a trade that would have sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers was annulled due to a failed medical exam, Williams returned to Spectrum Center with a statement performance.

In his first game back in Charlotte since the trade deadline drama, Williams posted an impressive 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a hard-fought 113-100 loss to the Washington Wizards. While the Hornets’ struggles continued with their sixth straight defeat, Williams’ effort was a silver lining, showing he remains a key piece of the team’s future despite recent speculation about his health.

The Trade That Wasn’t

The Lakers had been eyeing Williams as a potential defensive anchor, offering rookie sharpshooter Dalton Knecht in return. However, after conducting their medical evaluation, Los Angeles cited concerns over Williams’ lingering back issues and voided the deal. Knecht returned to the Lakers, leaving Williams in a Hornets uniform, seemingly with something to prove.

Despite the public nature of the failed trade, Williams made it clear postgame that he harbors no resentment.

“It’s part of the business,” Williams said. “Things happen, but at the end of the day, I’m here, and I’m going to keep working.”

A Statement Performance

Williams played with noticeable energy, aggressively attacking the glass and finishing strong at the rim. He showcased the rim protection that made him a sought-after trade piece, swatting multiple shots and altering several others. His chemistry with LaMelo Ball, who also made his return from injury, was evident as the two connected on multiple pick-and-roll plays.

Miles Bridges, who contributed 18 points and 7 assists, praised Williams’ resilience.

“You see a guy go through something like that, and he comes back and gives you everything? That’s respect,” Bridges said. “Mark’s a competitor, and we need that energy.”

Hornets’ Outlook

With the trade deadline now behind them, the Hornets will look to regroup and build around their young core. Williams’ performance against Washington suggests that he remains a foundational piece moving forward.

As Charlotte prepares for their next game against the Golden State Warriors, Williams’ play will be crucial in helping the team snap their skid. While the Lakers may have walked away from the deal, the Hornets might have just been reminded why they drafted him in the first place.

For now, Mark Williams isn’t looking back—only forward.
