Matthew Stafford cemented his place in Georgia Bulldogs history as one of the program’s most talented quarterbacks. Arriving in Athens as a highly touted recruit, Stafford became the first true freshman quarterback to start for Georgia since Quincy Carter in 1998. Though his first season was challenging, he showed steady improvement in his sophomore year, setting the stage for a breakout junior campaign.
Entering his third season as a Heisman Trophy contender, Stafford lived up to expectations, leading the SEC in pass completions (235) and throwing for 3,459 yards, the second-most in school history. He also set a single-season school record with 25 passing touchdowns. His leadership helped Georgia secure a 3–0 record in bowl games during his tenure.
Following his standout junior season, Stafford declared for the 2009 NFL Draft, where he was selected first overall by the Detroit Lions.
