Tennessee Vols Legend Carl Pickens Returns as Head Coach with New Contract
The Tennessee Volunteers announced a major homecoming on Thursday as legendary wide receiver Carl Pickens signed a new contract to return to the program as head coach. Pickens, who played for the Vols from 1989 to 1991 and became one of the most electrifying players in Tennessee football history, will take the helm of his alma mater starting in the 2025 season.
Pickens, a consensus All-American in 1991, is celebrated for his standout performances on the field, including his role in helping the Vols secure two SEC titles during his collegiate career. After a successful NFL career, primarily with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he earned two Pro Bowl selections, Pickens transitioned into coaching and quickly gained a reputation as a skilled leader and motivator.
In his first statement as head coach, Pickens expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to Rocky Top. “Tennessee is home. I’m honored to lead this program and help the Vols return to national prominence,” he said.
